We would like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our dear friend and founding board member, Mary Florence MacDonald who passed away in July, 2017. Girls Rock NL simply would never have happened without her. Thanks to her professionalism, skills, talent, bravery, strength, time, patience, thoughtfulness and kindness, young women in our communities have had the opportunity to learn, grow, share and rock out at Girls Rock Camp with no financial obstacle. Mary was an artist and an award winning art curator, and nothing gave her more joy than to see people thrive creatively. Mary studied at OCAD, and had a Curatorial MFA specializing in rural art and community. One of the areas she was interested in was making sure that people in rural communities were able to have access to creative opportunities. To further Mary’s vision as a curator, and to honour her passion for community building and fostering creativity in rural spaces, we will be launching the Mary MacDonald Girls Rock NL Travel Bursary during our 2018 Camp.
WHO WE ARE
Girls Rock NL is an inclusive musical community, mentorship program, and non-profit organization that builds self esteem amongst self-identified girls and gender non-conforming youth in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through its activities and a week long summer camp, Girls Rock NL connects self-identified girls and gender non-conforming youth to professional womxn in the arts, offers workshops for their success, and provides the opportunity to learn an instrument, write a song, and rock out on stage. Girls Rock NL fosters confidence, leadership, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration through music and performance empowering self-identified girls, gender non-conforming youth, and womxn, while encouraging a more diverse and inclusive city.
At Girls Rock NL's summer camp, youth aged 8-16 form bands, write songs, and perform at a final showcase. Bands are coached by some of Newfoundland and Labrador's most exciting womxn musicians who teach campers how to play an instrument and be in a band. No musical experience is necessary! Complementing the music component, Girls Rock NL offers fun opportunities for campers to speak with and listen to local musicians, take part in leadership workshops, and make new friends in a safe and encouraging environment.
It is well known that Newfoundland and Labrador hosts one of the strongest music communities across the country. Many local musicians are adept networkers, festival organizers, promoters, graphic designers, sound engineers, leaders, and collaborators. Emerging from this idea of community grew a conversation to start a Girls Rock Camp here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Drawing input from local musicians, feminists, and other Girls Rock initiatives across the country, Girls Rock NL was formed to support young girls wishing to pursue music, break down barriers, and empower themselves.
Girls Rock NL strives towards building a supportive community of self identified girls and gender non-conforming youth by providing opportunities to learn, explore, and empower themselves and each other through musical expression and education. Our mission is for young girls of Newfoundland and Labrador to rock out in all aspects of their lives.
We aim to create a sustainable, annual project that will foster community building among campers as well as provide mentorship and leadership opportunities for self-identified girls and gender non-conforming youth in Newfoundland and Labrador. The dream is for Girls Rock NL to grow into a sustainable long-term network of campers, staff, community members, and stakeholders interested in the empowerment and musical leadership of self-identified girls and gender non-conforming youth throughout our province.
JOIN THE MOVEMENT
Girls Rock NL is a volunteer run, non-profit organization based in St.John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Like all Girls Rock Camps around the world, Girls Rock NL is independently operated. Led by a group of professional womxn and gender non-conforming musicians and artists who believe in fostering activities that empower. We seek to build a more supportive environment for womxn in the arts.
Girls Rock NL welcomes participants, volunteers, and coaches who identify as womxn or who are gender non-conforming.
